The Orchard Sun Club was established in 1974. Naturist clubs had exissted in Dunedin for a long number of years before the OSC was formed by members of an existing club who wished to own their grounds. These members found grounds in Green Island, a suburb of Dunedin, and spent many months establishing games courts, swimming pool, etc. Unfortunately, a major landslide wiped out all this work, and the members had to begin again. Through their efforts, much of what had been before was re-established only to have vandals destroy buildings and facilities. The decision was made to re-locate further from the city and, in 1988, the Club purchased land near Middlemarch, about 1 hour’s drive away from Dunedin, where we are now based.
Our grounds are approximately 11 acres, and we have a five-bedroomed house on the grounds available for members and visitors. Each bedroom will sleep at least three, and contains a double bed and at least one single bed. All the usual amenities, such as bathroom, kitchen, shower, and toilet are available in the house. Also provided are all the needs for a stay, such as pots, pans, dishes, etc. including blankets and linen if needed. We also have a social hall, and separate ablution block with showers, toilets, and washing machine. There are power points for 6 caravans/campervans and plenty of room for tenting. Heating is provided by a pot-belly stove in the social hall, and an open fire in the house.
We do not have a swimming pool, but do have access to the nearby river (about 10 minutes walk, or 2 minutes drive away), where we are able to bathe nude. Fortunately, we have a good rapport with the locals who do not mind us "skinny dipping". But, remember, if there is any one else there, make sure you ask if it is okay!
We have recently established a miniten court which can be used by young and old alike in playing this enjoyable game of miniten. So, remember, if you are visiting our grounds, bring your miniten thugs with you.
We have a pool table in the social hall, and petanque and darts available.
Our country retreat is on Sutton Street in Sutton. Our nearest township is Middlemarch which is 7km away. This is a small rural town which has; a hotel that serves meals, a lovely cafe and a grocer’s store that also has a small dining area. We are handy to Salt Lakes and there are a lot of interesting old places to visit in the area. The land has interesting formations also, with large outcrops of schist rock to be seen everywhere. There are plenty of places to go walking.
The K-Cup: An annual miniten competition between Pineglades of Canterbury and the Orchard Sun Club. It is a fun day but the miniten is taken quite seriously. It is played as partners in a round robin with partners changing throughout. By some mysterious maths a winner is found at the end.
Interclub sports: A day of fun activities with other clubs invited. This has included blind tent errecting, various complicated sports with balloons held between the legs or passing balls without touching them with your hands, you probably get the picture here, undignified but fun. We played a reverse strip miniten and even simple disk golf.
Salt Lake Picnic: A walk to a local geological feature. This is in a public reserve near to the club grounds at Sutton, nobody seems to mind a few naked ramblers there. If you visit the club someday ask about the time that a one of the clubs life members locked her car keys (along with her clothes) in her car just before the walk.
Swimming: We have regular and well supported swims at the Otago Therapeutic Pool (usually known as the physio pool). These are for an hour on a sunday evening, happening about every second sunday through the winter. Warm waters and friendly people. Most of the people who go just loll around in the water chatting, though the children who go are abit more energetic.
Christmas Party: A regular party just before Christmas -usually with a rather bemused Santa Claus wondering why he should be wearing a hot red suit at a naturist club. Presents for all and party games are played of course.
